Garuda Oppa
Risograph 12 x 19 cm
2023
Invited by Poop Press, an independent art book publisher, for the Bangkok Art Book Fair, I created Garuda Oppa, a comic exploring the Garuda statues adorning corporate facades in Bangkok.
These mythical symbols of power not only signify royal-state endorsement but also embody patriarchal notion of the ideal male form—sculpted six-pack abs and heroic physiques—mirroring corporate authority. Through humor and field research, my comic highlights how mythology, capitalism, and gendered ideals intertwine, shaping Bangkok’s urban landscape.
Garuda has deep roots in Southeast Asian
history, with its mythic symbol widely visible
across Bangkok’s urban landscape.
Synopsis
A young emerging artist is commissioned by a major shopping mall to redesign a traditional Garuda for a younger audience.
To do so, he embarks on a
journey to explore Garuda’s
history and find the perfect
male form to inspire the
new design.
